Rockport is in the mid-coast region of Maine, about 190 miles driving distance northeast of Boston. It is one of the premier vacation destinations in New England, featuring all the beauty and amenities of the Camden-Rockport area. Within five miles of Rose Cottage there are both fine and rustic restaurants, upscale shopping, the Farnsworth Museum (home to the Wyeth family paintings), two lovely harbors, schooner rides, kayaking, sailing, lake swimming and hiking in Camden Hills State Park. Penobscot Bay Medical Center, a 110-bed regional hospital with a professionally-staffed emergency department is less than two miles from the Cottage.
Construction of Rose Cottage began in 1990 on land purchased some years earlier from LL Bean's grandaughter. The house is sited on two very private acres with 330 feet of rocky deepwater oeanfront on Rockport's outer harbor, with views of Indian Island Light, Beauchamp Point and numerous islands. Sail and lobster boats pass by on their way in and out of Rockport Harbor. Rockport was called America's most beautiful harbor by Charles Kerault, and made famous by the movie of the true story of Andre the Seal.
The grounds of Rose Cottage are a mixture of lawns, rock gardens, hardwood forest and natural undergrowth . There are slate patios with Adirondak chairs, and a lawn with a hammock under the apple tree. On the lawn is the Summer House, from which the outdoors can be enjoyed in screened comfort, with fireplace, wicker furniture and music. Below the patio and lawn are the rock gardens and pathways to the low bluff overlooking the water.
The Cottage is a small, romantic shingled house with ocean views from every room. Downstairs there is a cozy living area with fireplace, ship's berth bed, chair and small sofa. Entertainment includes HDTV, Apple TV, DVD and CD players, FM radio, and stereo system. The dining area features a cherry table with comfortable windsor chairs made by James Brown of Linconville. The kitchen is a small galley kitchen packed with every convenience and tool for the gourmet cook (Cuisinart, espresso maker, All-Clad pans, Bosch dishwasher).
Upstairs there is a large master suite with a luxury-quality king bed, easy chair with ottoman, and a small desk. The laundry room feature modern Maytag washer & drier. The master bath is generously sized, with double sink, comfortable shower, and a soaking tub with forest views. The bathroom is surfaced in Deer Isle granite.
Above the garage perches the Guest Quarters, an apartment with queen bed, sitting area, comfortable bathroom with shower, small refrigerator, electric tea pot, coffee maker and toaster oven. A bookcase features a large collection of contemporary and old Maine fiction.
Both the Cottage and the Guest Quarters are decorated with original Maine scenic paintings, and both enjoy central air conditioning and hi-def cable TV. There is wi-fi internet access throughout the Cottage.
